Presented in partnership with the Chicago Park District and in honor of the 250th anniversary of French-American relations, our annual summer series Films on the Green returns to parks across Chicago from June 27 to July 31, showcasing French-American collaboration on the silver screen.
The series opens on June 27 with the Johnny Depp–starring historical drama Jeanne du Barry, centered on the life of Jeanne Vaubernier, a working-class woman who uses her charm to rise through the ranks of Louis XV’s court.
Next, on July 10, catch the French-American, English-language animated feature Arco, produced by Natalie Portman, about a 10-year-old boy from a peaceful, distant future who accidentally travels back to the year 2075 and discovers a world in peril. The film features voice-overs by Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Natalie Portman, and Mark Ruffalo.
On July 17, revisit classic French cinema with a screening of Jean-Luc Godard’s New Wave crime drama Breathless (À bout de souffle), starring 1960s icons Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg.
On July 24, John Malkovich and Fanny Ardant star in the comedy-drama Mr. Blake at Your Service!(Complètement crammé). The film follows a widowed British businessman who takes a job as a butler at a manor house in France to reconnect with memories of his late French wife, only to encounter the eccentric behavior of the lady of the manor and her household staff.
The Chicago festival closes on July 31 with La Vie en Rose (La Môme), a tribute to the life of legendary singer Édith Piaf. From her early days performing at the Versailles in Manhattan to becoming a star at Carnegie Hall, Piaf had a deep and lasting connection to New York City.
Get ready for a summer of French-American cinema in this outdoor film series set in Chicago’s scenic parks.
Free and open to the public (no ticket needed).
