O Samba — An Evening of dance, queerness, blackness and afterlifes with Luiz de Abreu and Calixto Neto
Performance
In O Samba do Crioulo Doido, Luiz de Abreu deconstructs representations of the black body in Brazilian culture and associations to eroticism and exoticism.
The performance, danced by Calixto Neto, will be followed by a film screening and a discussion with Luiz de Abreu, Calixto Neto, Aimee Cox, and André Lepecki, as part of DANCE ASSEMBLY: A Conversation Series
The solo O Samba do Crioulo Doido, a response to the urgent need addresses the question of decolonialisation, the legacy of slavery and the relationships of domination it induces. The solo, devised and danced by Luiz de Abreu before being passed on to Calixto Neto, deconstructs the representations of the black body in Brazilian culture by bringing about a shift from a body-object to a body-subject.
