On October 18, 2024, join Gaîté Lyrique and four overseas French residency institutions for the launch of ¡Viva Villa!’s latest program, bringing together French artists in-residence abroad.

Viva Villa! returns to La Gaîté Lyrique – Fabrique de l’époque to present a sneak peak of projects developed by artists, creators, and researchers in-residence at four French residency institutions, including Casa de Velázquez (Madrid), Villa Albertine (US), Villa Kujoyama (Japan), and Villa Médicis (Rome).

Created in 2016 by the four French residences, ¡Viva Villa! supports contemporary creation through a multidisciplinary artistic program that co-produces around ten public events each year, including exhibitions, performances, installations, concerts, publications, etc., highlighting the work of residents and supporting their post-residency transition.

On October 18, guests are welcome to meet with artists and researchers in-residence and explore a series of workshops, screenings, and concerts touching upon major contemporary issues in literature, performing arts, architecture, and the visual arts, among other disciplines.

This year, Villa Albertine is delighted to welcome eight of its former residents to ¡Viva Villa! Writer Alain Damasio will present his book La Vallée du Sicilium, the first in the brand-new Albertine collection from Editions du Seuil, inspired by the author’s San Francisco residency. Artist-researcher SMITH and author Marie NDiaye will engage in a discussion about their journey across the USA and their project combining literature, cinema, performances, and installations. Choreographer, graphic designer, and director Smaïl Kanouté will present a dance performance entitled “Chief Scout / Black Indians” with Souffle Collectif, based on his immersion in New Orleans and research into traditional dance forms. Composer and New Orleans resident Anne Paceo will organize a concert exploring voodoo spiritualities with her band. Podcast producer Florence de Schlichting and visual artist Grégoire Korganow will share their experiences aboard the container ship MARIUS. Textile artist Chloé Bensahel will talk about her research work with MIT at the intersection of performance, textiles, and multimedia.

A multi-faceted venue, La Gaîté Lyrique – Fabrique de l’époque invites thinkers, artists, and activists to respond to the urgent need to act in a complex, fragmented world.
