Urbanism, Olympism & Migrations: Marseille Historians Stéphane Mourlane and Céline Regnard Share their Perspectives in Atlanta

This October, as part of France-Atlanta and City/Cité, Villa Albertine invites Marseille historians Stéphane Mourlane and Céline Regnard to Atlanta, where they will share their perspectives on the impact of olympism and migrations on urbanism.

During their trip to Atlanta, there will be 3 public events including one or both historians:

• Atlanta Studies Meetup on October 29 at from 6-9pm at Manuel’s Tavern with Stéphane Mourlane. The meetup will focus on Atlanta 1996 and Paris 2024 with a view towards the 2026 World Cup.
• Conference and talks at Georgia Tech with Stéphane Mourlane and Céline Regnard
• Talk with Stéphane Mourlane at Emory University with a comparative lens on olympism and urbanism between Atlanta 1996 and Paris 2024

This event is part of City/Cité Atlanta x Marseille, Villa Albertine’s transatlantic cooperation and exchange program on urban issues and city making. Launched in 2022, exchanges between these two cities notably explore the fertile relationships between culture and ecology, as well as urban policy and communities, and their ability to transform the way we make cities. 

Stéphane Mourlane is a professor of contemporary history at Aix-Marseille University. A researcher with the UMR TELEMMe at the Maison méditerranéenne des sciences de l’homme in Aix-en-Provence, he also teaches at Sciences Po Paris. His research focuses notably on international relations through sport and migration and between olympism and urban/architectural heritage. He is notably the author of Histoire politique des Coupes du monde de football (2006); he has just co-edited Atlas des migrations en Méditerranée: de l’Antiquité à nos jours (2021) and Une histoire mondiale de l’olympisme, 1896-2024 (2023). In 2024, Stéphane Mourlane is the co-editor of the book, “Olympism: a History of the World” and the co-curator of the current major exhibition in Paris: “Olympism: a History of the World” at the Musée de l’immigration – Palais de la Porte Dorée.

Céline Regnard is a professor in modern history at Aix-Marseille University, and director of the Maison méditerranéenne des sciences de l’homme at l’UMR TELEMMe. She has written extensively on the history of migration, crime and labor in the modern period, with most recently a book on transnational history of Syrian transit migration, En Transit. Les Syriens à Beyrouth, Marseilles, Le Havre, New York (1880-1914) (Anamosa, 2022). She is also the coordinator of The Mars-IMPERIUM project (“Imperial Marseille : (post)colonial history and memories 19th-21st centuries”) that brings together five joint research units (UMR) from Aix-Marseille University and ten socio-cultural partners. This project intends to investigate the imperial history of Marseille as a long-lasting “total social fact” and to present the research results through a web portal showcasing a vast array of resources (web documentary film, virtual exhibitions, heritage walks, archive index) contributed by all the consortium members.
