The 49th edition of France’s top film honors will take place in Paris at Olympia Concert Hall on February 23.

Thomas Cailley’s supernatural drama The Animal Kingdom topped the César nominations on Wednesday January 24, shortlisted in twelve categories ahead of Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, which received eleven nominations. The Animal Kingdom will additionally open Unifrance’s 2024 Rendez-Vous with French Cinema.

This year’s other major César contenders include, Jeanne Herry’s All Your Faces, Catherine Breillat’s Last Summer, and Cédric Khan’s The Goldman Case. Actor-director Arthur Harari, who co-wrote Anatomy of a Fall with Justine Triet, is nomainted for his supporting role in The Goldman Case.

France’s official Academy Award entry, Trần Anh Hùng’s foodie period drama The Taste of Things, which missed out on an Oscar nom on Tuesday, picked up three César nominations.

Villa Albertine resident Kaouther Ben Hania also received a nomination for Best Documentary for Four Daughters.

This year, three of the five directors in the running for Best Director are women, a reflection of the growing Feminist New “New Wave” of French Cinema. This comes one year after the controversy surrounding the lack of female representation in the category and that only one female director has won the honor in the history of the Césars.
