Join author Vanessa Schneider and journalist Alexandra Schwartz for an intimate discussion around Vanessa’s book My Cousin Maria Schneider, recalling the author’s relationship with her cousin, the actress Maria Schneider, but also the latter’s life and her experiences in the film industry, including the controversial film The Last Tango in Paris.

Vanessa Schneider is a French journalist and author of the bestselling and award-winning memoir Tu T’Appelais Maria Schneider, published in France in 2018. Vanessa is also the author of 9 other books, including the two novels La Mère de ma mère and Do Not Go CrazyTu T’Appelais Maria Schneider is her first publication translated into English, and it will be adapted to screen by Jessica Palud with actress Annamaria Vartolomei as Maria Schneider. Vanessa is currently a reporter at “Le Monde” in France and regularly contributes to the programs C dans l’air on France 5.


Alexandra Schwartz joined The New Yorker as a member of the editorial staff in 2013 and has been a staff writer since 2016. She has written extensively about literature as both a critic and a reporter, profiling writers such as Jennifer Egan, Miriam Toews, Vivian Gornick, and Ayad Akhtar. In 2014, she was awarded the National Book Critics Circle’s Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing. Schwartz, who has written frequently on France, covered the November, 2015, terror attacks in Paris. She has also written pieces about New York City’s newest neighborhood, the pitfalls of self-help, and the world’s largest coöperative grocery store. From 2019 to 2022, Schwartz has served as a theatre critic for the magazine.
