Singuliers Pluriel (Singulars plural)

Singuliers Pluriel (Singulars plural) is an immersive audiovisual installation that aims at questioning the reactivation, modification and deterioration processes of memories through the lens of the vernacular image, family films archives. The visitor enters a dark space where objects, projection screen and speakers mingle. On these screens, a selection of family films of the artist’s personal archive is being live-edited. The installation acts as an autonomous system that writes, in real time, a sound-image and non-linear score. By following mnemonic mechanisms, it activates, repeats and distorts the images and sounds according to what happened, what is happening, and what will happen. In this metaphor of the brain, the visitor acts as a potential stimuli as their movements act immediately on the editing in progress. By being immersed in this « theater of memory », the visitor moves around, explores and apprehends the work through their own relation to time and space, as well as their own experiences. During the creation of this installation, Jeannie Brie benefited from a six-month immersive residency in a neuroscience lab. She collaborated closely with neuroscientist Olivier Aron throughout the production process.
The Directors
The work of Jeannie Brie mainly takes the form of installations and audiovisual performances where she uses video as a material-image to sculpt and transform spaces. In doing so, she creates immersive environments, engaging the viewer in a direct and tangible relationship with the space. She uses real-life shots, archival images or studio experiments to compose her images librairies that form her «visual ranges». By relying on image manipulation techniques such as real-time processing, mapping, and interactivity, she develops nonlinear narratives that question our relationship with memory and time. Jeannie Brie’s work has been presented at festivals and exhibitions in France and abroad, such as Eurovidéo (Liège, BE), the 31st Instants Vidéos (Marseille, FR), LPM (Amsterdam, NL), Vision’R (Paris, FR), Vidéoformes (Clermont-Ferrand, FR), and L’Oeil d’Oodaaq (Rennes, FR). Her installation “Singuliers Pluriel” was supported by the CNC, the DRAC Grand Est, the Grand Est Region, and the city of Nancy, openspace, the CHRU-Nancy Brabois, the CCAM-scène nationale de Vandœuvre and the Poirel Gallery.
