The French Pioneers of the California Gold Rush
December 1st - 6th, 2026
Discover the French explorers, artists, and chroniclers who documented the making of early California with Dr. Claudine Chalmers
What did French observers see in California during the dramatic transformations of the nineteenth century? From early maritime explorers and diplomats to the emigrants drawn west by the Gold Rush, French voices recorded the landscapes, communities, and upheavals that shaped the emerging state of California and the expansion of America into the West.
Join Dr. Claudine Chalmers, historian, author, and independent researcher, for a series of four lectures exploring this fascinating chapter in French-American history. Drawing on decades of research in French and American archives, Chalmers brings renewed attention to the artists, adventurers, and chroniclers whose writings, correspondence, and illustrations offer a distinctive perspective on California’s early history.
Presented across the Bay Area in partnership with local French cultural institutions, this series offers an opportunity to rediscover the early historical connections between France and California and to explore how these early accounts continue to enrich our understanding of the American West.
