Villa Albertine Houston and the Rothko Chapel invite you to an illuminating conversation with Annie Cohen-Solal and David N. Myers as they delve into Revisiting the Rothko Chapel (2024), co-authored by A. Cohen-Solal and A. Rosen, exploring the profound intersections of democracy, art, and sacred space.

This international and interdisciplinary gathering of scholars invites audiences to experience the Chapel— and the light it offers—with fresh perspective and renewed understanding on the Chapel’s 55th anniversary.

About the Presenters 

Annie Cohen-Solal is Distinguished Professor at Bocconi University in Milan (Department of Social and Political Sciences). After her PhD from the Sorbonne, she led an academic career in Berlin (Freie Universität), Jerusalem (the Hebrew University of Jerusalem), New York (NYU Tisch School of the Arts), and France (École normale supérieure, École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), and Université de Basse-Normandie).

She is also a curator and the author of numerous award-winning books that have been translated into many languages, most of which were published in France by Gallimard. Her study of Rothko, Mark Rothko (2013, expanded edition 2023), is considered an authoritative work. Her forthcoming book, Métèques et météores: Portrait de l’artiste déraciné, will be published on October 22.

Born in Algiers, Cohen-Solal lives between Paris, Cortona and Milan.

David N. Myers is Distinguished Professor of History and the Sady and Ludwig Kahn Chair in Jewish History in the UCLA History Department.  He was the founding director of the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy from 2017-2026. He serves as the director of the UCLA Bedari Kindness Institute, which includes within it the Initiative to Study Hate and the Dialogue across Difference Initiative.
