Hailed as “the best-curated film event in New England” by the Boston Globe, the Maine International Film Festival (MIFF) gathers film-lovers every summer to celebrate some of the finest works of American independent and international cinema.
Hailed as “the best-curated film event in New England” by the Boston Globe, the Maine International Film Festival (MIFF) gathers film-lovers every summer to celebrate some of the finest works of American independent and international cinema. This year, MIFF will host its screenings from July 8th to July 17th in Waterville, Maine.
Included in this summer’s selection are numerous French films, including Années 20 (Roaring 20s), Tropique de la violence (Tropic of Violence), and Pénélopé, mon amour (Pénélope, My Love). Années 20 by Elisabeth Vogler follows 24 characters in one long unedited take as they roam around Paris and try to find joy amidst crisis following the pandemic lockdown. This film will have showings at 6:30 PM on July 10th at Railroad Square Cinema Theatre #1 and July 16th at the Waterville Opera House.
In Manuel Schapira’s Tropique de la violence, Moses illegally arrives as an infant in the French island of Mayotte, where he is then raised by a French nurse. When she suddenly passes away, he is forced to navigate a world of intolerance on his own as a 13-year-old boy and seek refuge in the island’s slums. Tropique de la violence will be screened at Railroad Square Cinema Theatre #3 on July 11th at 9 PM and July 15th at 3 PM.
In Pénélope, mon amour, Claire Doyon films the coming-of-age of her daughter Pénélope. Her heartfelt documentary follows how Pénélope’s autism shapes their mother-daughter relationship throughout the course of 18 years. Pénélope, mon amour will be shown at Railroad Square Cinema Theatre #3 on July 10th at 6 PM and Railroad Square Cinema Theatre #2 on July 13th at 9:15 PM.
