Talk
On August, French Cinémathèque, a monthly curated discussion series about French movies, features Eté 85 directed by François Ozon.
On Monday, August 26, join Chief Film Critic for Variety Peter Debruge as he hosts a discussion about Eté 85 directed by François Ozon (2020), starring Félix Lefebvre, Benjamin Voisin, Philippine Velge and Valeria Bruni‑Tedeschi.
While sailing in the idyllic summer waters, 16-year-old Alexis finds himself in peril when his boat capsizes during a fierce storm. Miraculously, he is rescued by the charming and enigmatic 18-year-old David. As they recover together from the harrowing ordeal, an unexpected and tender friendship blossoms between them, framed by the golden warmth of the summer sun. But as their bond deepens into a passionate romance, David’s seemingly perfect exterior begins to reveal darker, more complex layers. The summer’s promise of bliss is little by little overshadowed by an undercurrent of mystery and foreboding, leading both to confront their deepest fears and desires.
A bonus film will also be discussed: A Summer Dress by François Ozon (1996).
Tensions are simmering between the straitlaced Frédéric and his boyfriend, Sébastien. Frédéric bikes to the beach to escape and meets an older woman named Lucia who, without much conversation, leads him to a secluded spot where they have sex. When he returns to the beach, his clothes have disappeared…
This event will be on Zoom and is free and open to the public. The event will be in English with some French vocabulary. Please make sure to watch the film before the discussion. A list of streaming channels that offer Eté 85 can be found here.
