This December, the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque invites audiences to discover the profound artistry of Robert Bresson through his final three masterpieces, presented in newly restored 4K versions with subtitles and introduced by film expert Grafton Nunes.

The series includes Lancelot du Lac (1974), The Devil, Probably (1977), and L’Argent (1983). These films capture the stark, minimalist style that defines Bresson’s work, exploring themes of moral decay, societal collapse, and human vulnerability with unparalleled intensity.

Screening Schedule:

Lancelot du Lac (1974)
Bresson offers a stripped-down retelling of the Arthurian legend, focusing on Lancelot’s affair with Queen Guinevere amidst the crumbling chivalric order of Camelot. This unromanticized vision of honor and betrayal is one of his most striking works.
Sunday December 8, 5:00 PMTickets

The Devil, Probably (1977)
In this portrait of modern despair, Charles, a disillusioned Parisian youth, rejects conventional avenues of hope and struggles to find meaning in a collapsing world. Bresson’s critique of nihilism remains as relevant as ever.
Sunday December 15th, 4:30 PMTickets

L’Argent (1983)
Inspired by Tolstoy’s novella The Forged Coupon, this devastating examination of greed and corruption traces the ripple effects of a counterfeit bill as it upends lives. Bresson’s final film is a chilling testament to his mastery of storytelling.
Sunday December 22th, 3:30 PMTickets
