The city of Montpellier hosts many festivals during the year, but Montpellier Danse is THE festival in this city of winding medieval passages and centuries-old buildings in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, a two-hour drive from the border with Spain.

As it will celebrate its 45th edition, the festival honors the legacy of Jean-Paul Montanari, its director from 1983 to 2024. His retirement marks a new chapter, with the festival and the Centre Chorégraphique National merging under “Agora, cité internationale de la danse”, supported by the French state and the Occitanie region. This edition features 70% new creations, highlighting the festival’s commitment to innovation.

The 79th edition of the Festival d’Avignon will start in the beginning of July, once again as one of the world’s most important contemporary performing arts events. This year will celebrate the Arabic language and artists coming from Tunisia, Syria, and Morocco and dedicate one-third of its programming to dance.

For this edition, Tiago Rodrigues, director of the Festival d’Avignon, emphasized the inclusion of numerous artistic creations addressing current themes such as climate change and intergenerational communication. The program also includes a night of readings honoring Gisèle Pelicot, who became emblematic after a trial on violence against women.
