The Academy Museum’s French Silent Cinema Family Matinees will showcase the playful variety of genres that existed in cinema’s earliest days and the best of Méliès trick films and fantasies!
Shorts Program: The Mysterious Screen
This program features blocks of short films showcasing the playful variety of genres that existed in cinema’s earliest days, including stunning views of early 20th century Paris, riotous comedies by groundbreaking French filmmakers such as Alice Guy-Blaché, and the delightfully surreal fantasies and trick films of Segundo de Chomón and Gaston Velle, among others.
Presented in conjunction with the exhibit City of Cinema: Paris 1850-1907 at LACMA.

Shorts Program: The Magic Cinema of Georges Méliès
As one of cinema’s earliest and greatest innovators, Georges Méliès was a French illusionist, actor, and the first film director, known for his technical and narrative developments in cinema. He was especially prolific in his use of special effects, utilizing techniques such as splicing, multiple exposures, time lapse, dissolves, and more.
In this shorts program, audiences will witness the best of Méliès trick films and fantasies, all beautifully restored by Lobster Films.
