Gerard & Kelly : Recent Films

This event is focused on three films by Gerard & Kelly, all shot in modernist monuments in France: Panorama, at the Bourse de Commerce in Paris, recently renovated by Tadao Ando to house the Pinault Collection; Bright Hours, at the Cité Radieuse in Marseille, designed by Le Corbusier; and E for Eileen, at Eileen Gray’s E-1027 in the south of France, produced with the support of Mondes Nouveaux (New Worlds), a program developed by the French ministry of culture since 2021 whose aim is to provide financial support for artists to carry out projects destined mainly toward the valorization of national heritage (including outdoor sites and historical monuments). In advance of the broadcast of Gerard & Kelly’s collection on France Télévisions in spring 2024, the artists join architect Mario Gooden for a screening and discussion.

Gerard & Kelly
American artists based in Paris, Brennan Gerard and Ryan Kelly have collaborated for nearly two decades on performance, choreography, video, and installation. Having collectively studied ballet, visual art, literature, and gender studies, Gerard & Kelly use conceptual strategies within art and dance to examine broader themes of memory and history, sexuality and subjectivity. The duo’s first museum survey exhibition, Ruins, was held at the Carré d’Art – Musée d’art contemporain de Nîmes in 2022–23. Gerard & Kelly were Van Lier Fellows of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program before graduating with MFAs from the Interdisciplinary Studio at UCLA. In France their work has been presented by the Festival d’Automne à Paris, CN D Centre national de la danse, Palais de Tokyo, and most recently, Centre Pompidou.

Mario Gooden 
He is a cultural practice architect and director of Mario Gooden Studio: Architecture + Design. His practice engages the cultural landscape and the intersectionality of architecture, race, gender, sexuality, and technology. His work crosses the thresholds between the design of architecture and the built environment, writing, research, and performance. He is also co-Director of the Global Africa Lab at Columbia GSAPP, an innovative research initiative that explores the spatial topologies of the African continent and its diaspora. Gooden is the recipient of numerous design awards, citations, and recognitions and his work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including the International Exhibition of Architecture Biennale in Venice; the National Building Museum in Washington, DC; and the Municipal Arts Society in New York. His work has also been featured in journals and publications including ARTFORUM International Magazine, Architect Magazine, Architectural Record, Metropolis, Wallpaper, Architecture & Urbanism (A+U), and The New York Times.
