The screening for
Beau Travail will take place in the Ted Mann Theater on July 9, 2022, at 7:30pm. It will be a part of a double-screening with the film Double Happiness

The first chapter of the “Before” trilogy (followed by Before Sunset and Before Midnight), Before Sunrise, co-written and directed by Richard Linklater, centers on the spontaneous romance that blossoms between Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy), who meet on a train in Budapest, heading to Vienna and Paris, respectively. A casual interest transforms into a romantic attraction when Céline agrees to get off the train in Vienna with Jesse. Their chemistry grows stronger as they wander around the city, bonding over endless conversations. When night falls, sadness creeps in; once the sun rises, they must part ways, perhaps forever.

Still from Beau Travail (1999)

Claire Denis’s fifth feature film catapulted her into international fame with its lush cinematography (by Agnès Godard) and evocative story about a group of French legionnaires and their repressed desires. Adjudant-Chef Galoup (Denis Lavant) recalls his time in the army in Djibouti; when the striking Gilles (Grégoire Colin) joins his section, Galoup becomes envious and wishes for the young soldier’s destruction. Structured in an elliptical manner, Beau Travail explores the tragedy of living a life while denying oneself love.
