Contemporary ballet choreographer Angelin Preljocaj tackles the Mount Everest of the ballet world with his new take on Swan Lake.
Combining Tchaikovsky’s musical masterpiece with contemporary arrangements, Préljocaj’s Swan Lake reinvents the timeless tale of love, betrayal, seduction, and remorse into a contemporary ecological tragedy. The evil sorcerer von Rothbart is portrayed as an industrialist who wants to exploit fossil fuels against a backdrop of unbridled capitalism, while Siegfried and Odette are the two eco-conscious heroes who try to thwart his plans.
With 26 dancers, this beautiful tribute takes flight as an ingenious adaptation in which “the excellent performers… move with nuanced, fragile physical poetry, and a sense of the wounded souls they have become” (The New York Times).
