Cultural Partners

Villa Albertine is a cultural institution formed by a collaborative network between France and the United States. Our partners serve as the backbone of this network. Whether they are collaborating with us to curate an artists’ residency, joining forces to bring a professional program to life, or lending financial support to amplify Villa Albertine’s actions and impact, the institutions cited below, based in France, the United States, and around the globe, play an integral role in all aspects of the Villa.

The Villa would like to thank its institutional, corporate, and individual partners.

Created in 2011, Albertine Books Foundation is an American nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting French literature in the United States. In partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States and under Villa Albertine, Albertine Books Foundation promotes collaborative work and exchanges between France in the United States in the fields of literary creation and translation. The Albertine Books Foundation has encouraged English translations of French books in all categories (fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, comics, and poetry) through the Albertine Translation Fund since 2022, a new and enhanced version of the French Voices program that was originally created in 2006. In addition, the Albertine Translation committee chooses from among recipients two Albertine Translation prize winners each year – one in fiction and one in non-fiction. The Albertine Books Foundation is grateful for the generous support of Van Cleef & Arpels and individual donors

Fern Books is a small press unhurriedly dedicated to forms of writing, and ideas about publishing, that are thoughtful and generous and expansive. They are interested in literary risk-taking, adventures in form and content and authorship, and the connections and relationships fostered between books and their readers. They aim to think out loud, as it were, about whose imaginations literary text can stir, what makes text literary in the first place, and what shapes besides bound printed matter it might take. As they work on answering these questions, they plan to publish books—among other things—that they believe make the world a more enchanting, welcoming, and sane place.

Founded in 1905, The Juilliard School is a world leader in performing arts education. The school’s mission is to provide the highest caliber of artistic education for gifted musicians, dancers, and actors, composers, choreographers, and playwrights from around the world so that they may achieve their fullest potential as artists, leaders, and global citizens. Juilliard is led by Damian Woetzel, seventh president of the school, who has prioritized affordability and access to the highest level of artistic education while championing Juilliard’s tradition of excellence.

Located at Lincoln Center in New York City, Juilliard offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in dance, drama (acting and playwriting), and music (classical, jazz, historical performance, and vocal arts). The continuum of learning at Juilliard also includes nearly 400 students from elementary through high school enrolled in the Preparatory Division—Pre-College and Music Advancement Program (MAP); MAP serves students from diverse backgrounds often underrepresented in the classical music field. The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées is one of the most elegant performance venues in Paris. Designed in 1913 by a group of artists (Henry Van de Velde, the Perret brothers, Antoine Bourdelle, Maurice Denis), it was the first Parisian theatre to be entirely built of reinforced concrete, and has perpetuated for the past century a tradition of eclectic programmes of a high standard (opera, recitals, orchestral concerts, dance). Its opening is still vividly remembered for the ‘scandal’ of the premiere of Le Sacre du Printemps, whose impact on the public derived as much from Stravinsky’s music as from Nijinsky’s choreography. The artistic adventure of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées has been distinguished by the presence, for over one hundred years now, of the most prestigious creative figures in the history of music, opera and dance.

Words Without Borders is the premier destination for a global literary conversation. Founded in 2003, their mission is to cultivate global awareness by expanding access to international writing and creating a bridge between readers, writers, and translators.

As 21st century citizens, we are asked to seamlessly flow between worlds that are real and virtual, contemporary and ancient, local and global. What they have in common is that answers to them often feel out of reach.

The Gassendi Museum, which garners the title ‘Musée of France,’ holds a collection that can be visited in and outside the walls. Founded in 1889, the museum has had, from its inception, a dual vocation in arts and science, which today is reinforced by a museography inspired by the cabinets of curiosities.

The diversity of art and science collections in the 17th-century building presents the natural and patrimonial wealth of its territory – it is a permanent and evolving exhibition space in which artists work in situ alongside more classic collections. The contemporary art collection can be discovered by walking through the mountains.

The philosophical legacy of humanist scholar, Pierre Gassendi, which his contemporary, René Descartes, summed up in the saying “ambulo ergo sum / I walk, therefore I am” inspired the idea of opening the museum outside of its walls: the Museum in the mountains.

Emerging technologies are both local and global. Tech innovation coming out of Silicon Valley and elsewhere has major ripple effects throughout the entire world, dominating our lives in both positive and negative ways.

By placing artists within tech R&D teams at the heart of the global tech industry, in Silicon Valley, we allow art thinking to positively influence tech development processes. Additionally to our rapidly growing network, our new activities build on the findings of our investigation, published in The Grid – Art + Tech Reports of 2019 and our recent The Grid – Art + Tech Report of 2020.

Aligning artists and technologists to enhance our humanity

The Grid is a global network connecting artists and technologists. It was launched in Silicon Valley and has since transformed into a global multi-stakeholder platform of artists, technologists, cultural institutes, global art institutions, policy makers, and tech companies.

What? Art Powers Technology

The Grid follows an ambitious vision: We want to incorporate art-thinking into the development of new technologies and to jump-start a conversation between artists, technologists, and policy makers from around the world.

To meet this challenge, artists and technologists must come together, to imagine, to make, to create.
