Synopsis
1759, Mauritius. Under French colonial rule, enslaved laborers on sugar plantations live in constant fear. Sixteen-year-old Mati (Anna Diakhere Thiandoum) refuses to accept her fate, unlike her disillusioned father, Massamba (Ibrahima Mbaye). Desperate for freedom, she flees into the island’s wilderness, rumored to shelter runaway slaves. Her escape triggers a ruthless manhunt led by the brutal Madame La Victoire (Camille Cottin) and her sons, hired by the plantation owner (Benoît Magimel). Knowing the fate that awaits her if captured, Massamba breaks his chains and braves the treacherous jungle to find his daughter. Their journey becomes a fight for survival—and a final, irreversible break from the system that has bound them.
Simon Moutaïrou is a Franco-Beninese writer known for his work on Goliath and Black Box. No Chains No Masters marks his directorial debut and the first feature film about slavery in the French empire in 35 years.
