Amanda Morgan on Museum Next Generation
Art & Design, Museums & Heritage
Amanda Morgan, Associate Curator at Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, reflects on her recent trip to France where she participated in Villa Albertine’s Museums Next Generation program, a ten-day immersive experience bringing seven young American museum professionals to Paris and the South of France from November 3 to November 14, 2025. This unique opportunity allowed her to engage with the French museum landscape, exchange ideas, and build connections with peers across the Atlantic.
- What motivated you to take part in the Museum Next Generation program, and what were you hoping to gain from the experience?
I was motivated to take part in the experience because I thought it would be a really good learning experience. It is very valuable as a museum professional to be able to connect with my peers and leaders in the field to discuss how they approach different issues and carry that knowledge back with me. I was also hoping to expand my network, and I did. I met many wonderful people!
- From your U.S. perspective, what struck you as particularly interesting, relevant, or inspiring within the French museum ecosystem?
It was interesting to learn about the French museum ecosystem, which is actually quite different from in the US. But, despite these differences, we are all facing many of the same challenges and are reaching for the same goals. So it was quite inspiring to see how French institutions are approaching these matters and how these strategies and styles can be applied back home. For instance, it was interesting to see how different museums approach reaching new audiences, particularly their local communities.
- Looking ahead, what kind of follow-up or continuation do you envision, and how do you see this experience influencing your work at ICA in the future?
Going into the future, I’d like to continue the conversations with my new colleagues. It’s an invaluable resource to now have this network to be in dialogue with. I would also love to work together on new exhibitions or events, so that we can further diversify our programming and strengthen these new partnerships. I’m really excited about the opportunities that this experience has created!
