Nicolas Pinon
2026 Oui Design! laureate and expert in lacquer techniques.
Nicolas Pinon is a contemporary lacquer artist who bridges tradition and innovation. Trained in cabinetmaking at the École Boulle and in Kanshitsu dry lacquer techniques under Master Nagatoshi Onishi in Japan, he transforms this ancestral craft into a medium for contemporary expression. His work combines mastery of traditional gestures with innovative experiments, such as thermochromic natural lacquers, laser engraving, layered textures, and imprints, creating surfaces that reveal patterns and depth through time, material, and gesture.
Throughout his career, he has collaborated with renowned architects and designers, such as Jacques Garcia and Peter Marino, as well as with prestigious maisons including LVMH and Van Cleef & Arpels. His work has been recognized with the Bettencourt Prize pour l’intelligence de la main and the Grand Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris in 2020. Some of his pieces are part of the collections at the Mobilier National and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, reflecting institutional recognition of his work. His creations embody a balance between archaic craftsmanship and technological innovation, where time, patience, and the beauty of imperfection lie at the heart of the work. Recognized both as a technician and an artist, Nicolas Pinon continues his creative research, celebrating the ongoing dialogue between tradition, know how, and artistic expression.
