Ep 1: Summer 1940, France is defeated. Many refuse the capitulation, but the vast majority of French fall into line behind Marshal Pétain, who requested the armistice. 18 June; the call to resist from an unknown general, Charles de Gaulle, persuades Jeanne Bohec, Daniel Cordier and Gilbert Renault to head for London.

Ep 2: After Hitler’s invasion of the USSR in June 1941, the communist party begins its armed struggle. In August, Colonel Fabien, head of the Special Organisation, executes a Nazi officer at the Barbès metro station in Paris. The retaliation is immediate and terrible: hostages such as Guy Môquet are shot.
