Southern Exposure is a new project led by Marseille saxophonist Raphaël Imbert, in collaboration with Atlanta jazz musician Kebbi Williams. Created in November 2024 during the Atlanta Music in the Park Festival, the project will travel this summer to Jazz Club 222 at the Marseille Jazz des Cinq Continents Festival.

Get ready to groove and see XXL improvisations! The fruit of multiple encounters between artists and organizations in Atlanta and Marseille, Southern Exposure is the latest project in a program of exchanges and creations that revisits the codes of musical improvisation with intensity, passion and a contemporary flair. The project, part of City/Cité Atlanta x Marseille and supported by Villa Albertine’s Jazz and New Music grant, combines energy and intelligence and the ingredients that make up the color of two cities steeped in history and aspirations: jazz, rap, hip-hop, orality, traditions, and gospel and folk music.

The story began in October 2022 when Elodie Le Breut, Director of AMI at Friche la Belle de Mai, first connected with saxophonist Kebbi Williams and his collective, Reverence. In May 2023, French saxophonist and composer Raphaël Imbert embarked on a creative exploration with Villa Albertine in the United States. His project, Music is My Field, set out to explore the rich musical traditions of the Southeast and Appalachia and led him to meet Kebbi Williams and Reverence at the legendary Gallery 992, in Atlanta.

These encounters sparked a transatlantic artistic exchange. Elodie Le Breut invited Kebbi Williams to perform at the J.E.S.T. Festival in Marseille in November 2023, and Raphaël Imbert invited Reverence to perform at the Marseille Jazz des Cinq Continents festival in July 2024.

The collaboration deepened in November 2024, when Imbert came back to Atlanta alongside French musicians T.I.E. (electronics) and Blanche Lafuente (drums), both selected by Le Breut, to co-create a new piece with Kebbi Williams, Zacchaeus Paul, and Daniel Wytanis. The result was a powerful performance at Music in the Park on November 17, 2024.

In July 2025, this project will come to Marseille Jazz des Cinq Continents with a new title: Southern Exposure. The ensemble brings together the jazz-forward energies of Atlanta – Kebbi Williams (sax), CJ Brison (drums), and Zacchaeus Paul (keys) – and Marseille and France, represented by Imbert (sax), Lafuente (drums), and TIE (vocal and electronics).

The group will take the stage on July 12, and Advenir Collective will perform on July 11, 2025, at the Marseille Jazz des Cinq Continents festival. Learn more.
