Villa Albertine San Francisco commemorates with San Francisco Museums of Fine Arts the 100th anniversary of The Legion of Honor, the little sister of the Legion of Honor Museum in Paris and a cultural landmark with deep ties to France.
Since its dedication on November 11, 1924, the Legion of Honor has become a cherished institution, offering world-class art and stunning views of the Golden Gate. To celebrate this centennial, a yearlong series of special events and programs will commence in November 2024, highlighting the museum’s significant role in the Bay Area’s cultural landscape. The building itself is a replica of the French Pavilion from the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, which was modeled after Paris’ Palais de la Légion d’Honneur. Alma de Bretteville Spreckels constructed this permanent version with the French government’s support, showcasing exceptional French and European art.
The Grand Chancelier of the Legion of Honor in Paris will deliver remarks at the public ceremony, alongside FAMSF Director Thomas Campbell, reflecting on the enduring relationship between France and the city. The celebration will also feature a conversation between Amélie Simier, Director of the Rodin Museum in Paris, and the FAMSF Director, exploring Rodin’s legacy at the Legion of Honor.
