On February 25, enjoy stirring military ballads, lively dance tunes, and songs of patriotism and camaraderie for a Lafayette commemoration concert.
How did the music of the colonial, revolutionary, and federal periods express the varied thoughts, fears, and hopes of Americans through contemporary musical styles?
Based on both manuscript and published source materials, David and Ginger Hildebrand have crafted a selection of music from the Old and New Worlds, infused with American fervor, pride, and a growing appreciation for France. Drawn from period sources, the program includes pieces composed to mark significant events; songs enjoyed by citizens, officers, and soldiers alike; lively dance tunes of the era; military ballads; and instrumental works performed at impromptu theatrical presentations and concerts during Lafayette’s visits to America. This program is presented as part of our celebration of the Bicentennial of the Marquis de Lafayette’s farewell tour of the United States.
David and Ginger Hildebrand are specialists in researching, recording, and performing early American music. Since 1980, they have delivered concerts and educational programs across the country, partnering with museums, historical societies, public schools, and universities. Their sponsors have included Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art, Colonial Williamsburg, and the Society of the Cincinnati, among others. In addition to offering family-friendly and adult programs, David and Ginger frequently perform at primary schools and conduct teacher workshops to enhance the teaching of American history through music. In 1999, alongside dance historians Kate van Winkle Keller and Robert Keller, they founded The Colonial Music Institute.
