This fall, Cinematheque Madison (University of Wisconsin) offers a rare chance to see Robert Bresson’s final three masterpieces, presented in restored DCP and 35mm prints.

Robert Bresson’s final three films—Lancelot du Lac, Le Diable Probablement, and L’Argent—are powerful testaments to a filmmaker operating at the peak of his artistry well into his 70s and 80s. The transcendent experience these films provide is elevated even further when viewed as intended: on the big screen.

Screening Schedule:

Lancelot du lac (1974)
Robert Bresson · 85m · DCP
Bresson’s minimalist retelling of the Arthurian legend focuses on Lancelot’s adulterous affair with Guinevere during the decline of Camelot. The film’s spare style and elliptical imagery highlight themes of love, betrayal, and spiritual conflict.
Friday, October 18th, 7:00 PM

The Devil, Probably (Le Diable probablement) (1977)
Robert Bresson · 95m · 35mm
A meditation on youth and despair, Bresson’s penultimate film follows a group of disillusioned young people, focusing on Charles, whose search for meaning in a modern, failing world drives him to the brink.
Friday, November 1st, 7:00 PM

L’argent (1983)
Robert Bresson · 84m · DCP
Inspired by Tolstoy’s novella, Bresson’s final film traces the tragic consequences of a counterfeit bill’s journey through society, leading to imprisonment and violence. This austere exploration of greed and dehumanization stands as one of Bresson’s most chilling works.
Friday, December 6th, 7:00 PM
