LES LUMIERES: Communities at Work & AFEX Awards for French Architecture

Join us for a special opening night of the of an exhibit of the 2020 Laureates of Prize Architectes Français à l’Export (AFEX).

The evening features a conversation between Christophe Hutin and David Brown, director of the Chicago Architecture Biennial with a screening of Christophe Hutin’s short film, Communities at work.

Hutin represented France at the 2021 17th International Architecture Exhibition, Venice, and this film premiered in the French Pavilion in response to curator Hashim Sarkis’ question— “How will we live together?”

Communities at Work reflects on the meeting between architectural know-how and the inhabitants’ own experiences of their living spaces through case studies in France, South Africa, Vietnam, and the United States. This transversal approach to the profession is an attempt to shed light on the implications of architecture in a contemporary world subject to massive changes. The film invites spectators along on this international journey, to move from one world to another, from Mérignac to Detroit, from Hanoi to Johannesburg without a predetermined path.

AFEX is non-profit association with more than 200 members: a hundred architecture firms but also engineers, planners, landscape architects, and manufacturers. AFEX promotes the savoir-faire of French architects abroad; animates the professional public and private partners network committed to exportation; diffuses information about contracts and international tenders; facilitates access to exportation aids; develops shared experiences within its network; organizes events in France and throughout the world  (Grand Prix AFEX); assists international clients in search of French expertise.

Program in the auditorium followed by a wine and cheese reception in our salon. We hope you will join us!

Communities at Work is currently on view through Dec. 18 at the Graham Foundation as a part of the 2021 Chicago Architecture BiennialThe Available City.
