“Biguine” film screening and reception with Patrick Chamoiseau

Join us on Monday, October 28th for the screening of the 2004 film “Biguine” followed by a conversation with its screenwriter Patrick Chamoiseau, and a Caribbean reception at La Maison Française, included with the ticket.

About the film

In Martinique, at the end of the 19th century. Abandoning the plantation in which they work, Hermansia and Tiquitaque, a couple of musicians, decide to settle in Saint-Pierre, then at its peak. But they will quickly become disillusioned: the majestic city, fascinated by Western music and instruments, rejects their drums, their bamboo pipes and their plantation songs. A long drift will then begin during which they will learn these rhythms from elsewhere. Their talent gave birth to the Biguine, a Métis creation of incredible vitality that would become the symbol of Saint-Pierre.

The film lasts for 1h30 mn and will be subtitled in English. It will be followed by a Q&A between the audience and the screenwriter Patrick Chamoiseau, moderated by Professor Charly Vestraet. A reception with Caribbean appetizers will then take place until 9:15pm.

Patrick Chamoiseau

Patrick Chamoiseau, poet, novelist and essayist, is the author of a multifaceted body of work that has won numerous awards (Prix Carbet de la Caraïbe in 1990, Prix Goncourt and Prix Goncourt des Lycéens in 1992, Prix Spécial du Jury RFO in 2002, Prix du livre RFO in 2008, Prix Marguerite Yourcenar in 2023…) and been translated worldwide. His aesthetic explores the creolization and relational poetics of the contemporary world. Today, he is one of the most important literary figures in the Caribbean.

Among his many projects, Patrick Chamoiseau contributed to the motion picture “Biguine” as screenwriter, along with director Guy Deslauriers.

No one will be admitted without a reservation and official ID. Due to strict security measures, please arrive on time, as doors will be closed at 7:30 pm sharp.
