Meet the Resident – Black Mountain College and Utopian Societies in the Digital Age 

Sylvain Couzinet-Jacques is finalizing his PhD at the Arles National School of Photography and the University of Aix-Marseille, focusing on Black Mountain College. His research delves into the school’s photographic and textual archives and its students. Using AI, these documents are reinterpreted to create new narratives, exploring the concept of retcon and the college’s history. Couzinet-Jacques invites you to join his exploration of historical materials, examining the legacy of Black Mountain College and the significance of art in collective utopian societies. 

Black Mountain College was an experimental educational institution founded in 1933 near Black Mountain, North Carolina, USA. It emphasized interdisciplinary arts and attracted a diverse faculty and student body. Known for its unconventional approach to education, the college encouraged experimentation and collaboration across various disciplines. Despite facing financial challenges and closing in 1957, Black Mountain College had a significant impact on American art and education, with many of its alumni and faculty becoming influential figures in their fields.
