Julia Ducournau’s Titane has been chosen to represent France in the 94th Oscars Best International Film category. Starring Agathe Rousselle and Vincent Lindon, it had been awarded earlier this year with the Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or. After a tight race against Audrey Diwan’s “Happening” and Cédric Jimenez’s “Bac Nord”, Julia Ducournau’s film was selected to represent French contemporary cinema at the 94th Academy Awards.
Julia Ducournau’s Titane (2021) has been selected to represent France at the 94th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film race.
Starring Agathe Rousselle and Vincent Lindon, Titane combines gender questioning and cinematographic genre in a narratively-daring and visually-stunning production.
The film brings together the parallel stories of Alexia, a motor show showgirl with a titanium plate in her head, and Vincent, a pumped-up steroid-using firecaptian whose son went missing many years earlier. As a young and pregnant fugitive, Alexia pretends to be the firefighter’s missing son, finding refuge in his fire station. Titane offers a disturbing—yet poetic—exploration of these two marginalized figures’ relations.
After a tight race against Audrey Diwan’s Venice International Film Festival Golden Lion winner Happening (2021) and Cédric Jimenez’s Bac Nord (2020), Ducournau’s film was selected by France’s selection committee to represent French contemporary cinema at the 94th Academy Awards.
Titane was released in US movie theaters on Oct. 1, and had the biggest worldwide opening for a French-language film in more than 15 years.
Earlier this year, the film was awarded with the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or. At the beginning of November, it will also be part of the 25th COLCOA Film Festival line-up.
