Oui Design, a program developed by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and its partner foundation FACE to foster creative exchange between designers and craftsmen on both side of the Atlantic, is returning to WantedDesign New York for a fourth edition.
This year, it will present several sets of collaborative projects from May 10-22, 2019 at NYCxDesign: Transatlantic Creative Exchange, returning on popular demand, Design Education, focusing on design at an academic level and Game ChangeHer, shedding light on female designers. These projects simultaneously bring together designers from France and the US while exploring new methods of production at the intersection of design, art, and craft.
Transatlantic Creative Exchange
Initiated in 2016 by the Cultural Services, Transatlantic Creative Exchange is a program that pairs French and American designers and manufacturers to explore new techniques and innovates boldly as a unified transatlantic design team. The designer/manufacturer duos are selected based on overlapping interests, geographic diversity and desire to engage in creative collaboration.
Designer-manufacturer duos include:
- Elyse Graham (US), a Los Angeles-based artist specializing in her use of resin and plaster, and CIAV Meisenthal (France), the international centre of glass art
- Philippe Nigro (France), a French Designer who received the recognition of Designer of the Year at Paris Maison & Objet Paris in 2014, and Corning Museum of Glass, Glass Lab (US), a not-for-profit museum dedicated to glass
- Rodolfo Agrella (US), a contemporary American Designer based in New York, and Procédés Chenel International (France), an interior design company
- Guillaume Delvigne (France), a French designer who leads projects for companies such as Hermès, Givenchy, Cristal de Sèvres, and La Redoute, and Neal Feay (US), a Santa Barbara-based company focused on creative aluminum
The results of these collaborations will be exhibited at WantedDesign Brooklyn.
Design Education: French Design Schools Collaborations
This year more than ever with Oui Design, the program will aim at promoting the design collaboration at an academic level, with the participation of no less than four French design schools to the program: Strate School of Design, Ecole Boulle, ENSAD (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs), and ENSCI Les Ateliers. Five students and one teacher from each school will be part of WantedDesign as part of Oui Design during NYCxDESIGN. While in New York, they will participate in workshops and exhibit their work at WantedDesign Brooklyn. Students from Strate School of Design and Ecole Boulle will participate in the WantedDesign Schools Workshop, and students from ENSAD (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs) and ENSCI Les Ateliers (in partnership with Alessi) will exhibit their work at WantedDesign Brooklyn.
Game ChangeHer, a focus on female designers
Oui Design will also be supporting Game ChangeHer NYC, an exhibition highlighting creations signed by key women-designers selected between France and the United States. Game ChangHer NYC will celebrate the universality of design, seen here by the prism of the feminine. Following-up on Game ChangHer Paris curated by Eyes on Talents in 2017, Game ChangHer NYC will present the work of Lani Adeoye, Nina Cho, Pauline Deltour, Claire Lavabre, Inès Le Bihan, Nao Tamura, Marie Victoire Winckler.
