Films on the Green: Jean Grémillon’s Lumière D’été Presented by Matías Piñeiro

NEW YORK, June 21st, 2017— On July 21st, 2017, the free outdoor French film festival Films on the Green will screen the 1943 drama Lumière d’été directed by Jean Grémillon. Lumière d’été was selected for the festival by guest curator, director Matías Piñeiro. The screening will take place at 8:30 p.m. at Riverside Park, Pier I, at 70th Street. Matías Piñeiro will introduce the film.

The film features the Parisian Michèle, who arrives at a remote mountaintop hotel in Provence and is involved in a love triangle with a worker and an aristocrat whose neighboring castle will be the scene of a show-stopping costume ball.

With a screenplay by Jacques Prévert and Pierre Laroche, the film stars Madeleine Renaud and Pierre Brasseur. The director, Jean Grémillon, is known for films including MaldoneLady KillerRemorques, and Le Ciel est à vous.

Matías Piñeiro on his selected film Lumière d’été:

“Produced in France in a time of war and Nazi occupation, Grémillon’s film doesn´t avoid composing a darker fantasy about the tensions between love and class. It is a bittersweet nightmare that criticizes the establishment and its abuse of power as a means to doom. Comedy and tragedy counterpoint each other in a tale destined to mirror our world in order to desperately produce a variation for a better future.”

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1982, Matías Piñeiro studied at Universidad del Cine, where he later taught Filmmaking and Film History. In 2011, he moved to the U.S. to undertake the Radcliffe Institute Fellowship at Harvard University. His films include The Stolen Man (2007), They All Lie (2009), Rosalinda (2010), Viola (2012), and The Princess of France (2014). Hermia & Helena (2016) is the fourth instalment of his series on the female roles in William Shakespeare’s comedies and his first English speaking film. He currently teaches Filmmaking at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, while developing Ariel, a CPH: LAB project with Galician co-director Lois Patiño based on William Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

The screening of Lumière d’été (1h50) is free and open to the public and will take place at Riverside Park, Pier I, at 70th Street on Friday, July 21st, 2017 at 8:30pm. DJs from Hunter College’s radio station, WHCS will spin French music on-site before the screening. The film will be shown in French with English subtitles.
