Building Community Through Language : Marie-Edmonde Parisien on the French Heritage Program

September 2025 – In this interview, Marie-Edmonde Parisien discusses how the French Heritage program at Evanston Township High School empowers Francophone students to celebrate their culture, strengthen academics, and build community. Supported by Villa Albertine since 2023, the initiative has created a vibrant space for connection.

Can you introduce yourself ?

My name is Marie-Edmonde Parisien. I was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and I work as a Bilingual Paraprofessional in the Multilingual Department at Evanston Township High School. I also lead the French Heritage Club, thanks to support from Villa Albertine.

What, in your personal background, led you to promote the French language in schools?

I grew up in Haiti, so French has always been in my blood. My father, Edmond, served as Assistant Mayor and represented Haiti internationally. His work around the world inspired my own love for the language and culture.

Can you describe the French Heritage program in Evanston (target audiences, curriculum integration, content and teaching approaches)?

The French Heritage program at Evanston Township High School is designed for students with a French-speaking background. It integrates French language learning with History, Geography, and Language Arts, using content such as short stories, articles, grammar exercises, and vocabulary development. Teaching approaches include differentiated instruction, small- and large-group activities, and collaborative projects that encourage students to share ideas and knowledge.

What impact has the French Heritage program had on the students and the school?

The program gives students from Francophone countries the opportunity to celebrate their language and heritage alongside peers who share the same background, creating a true sense of belonging.

Since the program’s inception at Evanston Township High School, what initiatives have students launched? What have been the most significant events since September 2024?

Since the program’s inception, we have launched an ambassadorship program. Student ambassadors attend school events, volunteer to support French-speaking students and families, create buttons for French-speaking staff, and more. One of our biggest accomplishments is the visibility of the club—it brings together students from all over the world, from France to Haiti to Africa.

What future actions do you plan to implement within the framework of the French Heritage program?

This year, we plan to continue our work at ETHS and expand to other schools in the neighborhood, offering French activities to students.
