The author of the Nino Dino series toured several bilingual and immersion schools as part of French Getaways Program.
French author Camille Kohler concluded a three-week tour of French dual language schools in the US as part of the Embassy’s “French Getaways” initiative. French Getaways brings Francophone authors and illustrators into immersion classrooms throughout the US, where students have the opportunity to participate in author workshops and experience the French language brought to life. Kohler’s French Getaways tour was no exception, with stops in Minnesota, Kansas, Texas, California, and Utah. Kohler’s tour engaged thousands of school children in French language and culture.
In each city, Kohler was warmly welcomed by dozens of dual language students and their teachers, many of whom had been working with Kohler’s Nino Dino series in the weeks preceding her visit. Kohler discussed her work, the world of writing, French culture, and the long history of partnerships between the US and France. Afterwards, she engaged in a lively Q&A with students in French. In some classes, the Q&A was followed by a writing workshop, where students had a chance to express themselves in French and English on the topic of the writing life.
Kohler reflected on her experience with nothing but praise for the many curious students and passionate, motivated teachers she encountered. The schools hosting Kohler expressed their pleasure and satisfaction with the outcome of the program, and their certainty of the impact it had on students. The future of French language programs in the United States looks bright indeed!
