NEW YORK, July 6, 2017—The 10th annual Films on the Green festival, which presents free French films in NYC Parks, will include for the first time this year a film screening in French with Spanish subtitles: The Science of Sleep (La Science des Rêves) by Michel Gondry.
The screening will take place on July 12 at 8:30pm in the newly invested J. Hood Wright Park (West 174th Street between Fort Washington and Haven Avenues) and is presented in partnership with the Mexican Cultural Institute of New York.
The film depicts the whimsical and imaginative Stéphane (Gael García Bernal) who has a mundane job at a calendar company in Paris and wishes for a more creative outlet. He becomes enamored by his neighbor, Stéphanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg), but the relationship is threatened by the constant seepage of his fantasy life into his real world.
Directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Mood Indigo, The Green Hornet), the film stars Gael García Bernal, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alain Chabat, Miou-Miou, and Emma de Caunes.
“On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Films on the Green, we are very proud to present the festival’s very first French film with Spanish subtitles,” said Cultural Counselor of the French Embassy, Bénédicte de Montlaur. “Connecting with the Spanish-speaking community has been an objective of ours for many years, and this festival which screens in parks across New York City all summer, reaching a broad audience of all ages, is a perfect fit. We hope that The Sciences of Sleep will draw the local community’s attention onto successful and inspiring French-Mexican collaborations around cinema such as this one.”
“We are very excited to be partnering with our French colleagues in promoting cultural diversity and language inclusion in New York,” added Executive Director of the Mexican Cultural Institute, Caterina Toscano.
The screening of The Science of Sleep (1h45) is free and open to the public, and will take place in J. Hood Wright Park on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 8:30pm. The film will be shown in French and English with Spanish subtitles.
