The first in a series of international exhibitions exploring the suburbs of France and the United States, “In the Banlieues: Oakland/Saint-Denis” was presented throughout the summer in Paris, Saint-Denis, San Francisco, and Oakland, partly co-produced with the Pavillon de l’Arsenal in Paris and the urban agency SPUR in San Francisco.
Whether termed suburbs, outskirts, or banlieues, this exhibition aimed to center the margins. Oakland, California, and Saint-Denis asserted their cultural and artistic influence while innovating solutions to the challenges of inequity and rapid urban development faced by metropolises.
