Plus de 50 artistes et créateurs issus de toutes les disciplines mèneront des projets exploratoires inédits en immersion dans des dizaines de villes américaines.
New York, le 12 juin 2024 — La Villa Albertine a dévoilé aujourd’hui la liste de plus de 50 créateurs de toutes nationalités – chorégraphes, artisans d’art, musiciens ou encore cinéastes – qui s’installeront dans 28 villes américaines en 2025 pour des résidences exploratoires. Conçues comme des expéditions de recherche destinés aux professionnels des arts, de la culture et des sciences humaines, ces résidences d’exploration d’un à trois mois sont adaptées au projet de chaque résident. Elles incarnent la mission de la Villa Albertine en faveur d’échanges renouvelés et de collaborations durables entre les acteurs culturels français et américains. Par ailleurs, pour la première fois depuis le lancement du programme de résidences en 2021, la Villa Albertine a dédié un appel spécifique aux artistes et professionnels de la musique classique, avec le soutien de Société Générale.
Rayonnant à partir de dix villes américaines, la Villa Albertine bouleverse le modèle traditionnel de la résidence d’artiste. Plutôt que d’accueillir les résidents dans un lieu unique, cette institution culturelle française met à leur disposition des logements, les met en relation avec des partenaires et mobilise des ressources, partout où leurs recherches l’exigent.
« La Villa Albertine est une organisation absolument extraordinaire qui se déploie à travers toute l’étendue des États-Unis, et qui rassemble des intellectuels, des artistes et des créateurs en quête de réflexion et d’apprentissage mutuel. En ce sens, elle représente ce que je considère comme le XXIe siècle, où nous ne sommes plus centrés sur un seul lieu, mais où nous travaillons en réseaux et en circuits à travers de nombreux endroits », a déclaré Glenn D. Lowry, directeur David Rockefeller du MoMA et président du jury de sélection.
Chaque résidence est exploratoire : l’accent est ainsi mis sur la richesse des échanges et la conceptualisation de nouvelles idées, plutôt que sur la production d’un travail et sa finalisation sans toutefois l’exclure. Les résidences de la Villa Albertine ont ainsi servi de tremplin à des artistes pour écrire des romans à succès (Vallée du silicium d’Alain Damasio, 2024), publier de nouveaux romans graphiques (Touchez pas aux grizzlys d’Alice Chemama dans la Revue Topo, 2024), imaginer des créations chorégraphiques (In the Fall de Noé Soulier), organiser des expositions (Marslanta de Djellali El Ouzeri) et lancer de nombreux projets de films narratifs et documentaires, de podcasts et d’installations multimédias.
« Depuis le lancement du programme de résidences de la Villa Albertine, notre réseau, fort de plus de 200 anciens résidents, a puisé dans ses expériences pour nourrir des projets et des partenariats à long terme qui font vibrer la scène culturelle de part et d’autre de l’Atlantique. Nous sommes ravis d’accueillir cette nouvelle cohorte aux États-Unis et de les accompagner dans le lancement de leurs projets ambitieux et inédits dans de nombreuses disciplines », a déclaré Mohamed Bouabdallah, conseiller culturel de France aux Etats-Unis et directeur de la Villa Albertine.
Les résidents sélectionnés pour 2025 représentent 10 nationalités et sont âgés de 21 à 62 ans. Ils mettront en lumière l’histoire du Double Dutch à New York, esquisseront des architectures écologiques à Miami, retraceront l’exil et l’altérité à San Francisco, révèleront l’effervescence de la classe ouvrière à Atlanta, et bien plus encore. L’appel à projets était ouvert de novembre 2023 à février 2024 aux créateurs, chercheurs et professionnels de la culture de toutes nationalités. Des comités d’experts locaux se sont réunis dans chacune des 10 villes de la Villa Albertine pour dresser une présélection. La sélection finale a ensuite été établie par un jury international présidé par le directeur du MoMA David Rockefeller, Glenn D. Lowry, et composé du conseiller culturel de France aux États-Unis et directeur de la Villa Albertine, Mohamed Bouabdallah, de la romancière primée Nicole Krauss, de la présidente du BAM, Gina Duncan, du président du Centre Pompidou, Laurent Le Bon, du vice-président exécutif des acquisitions et de la production chez Sony Pictures Classics Dylan Leiner, et de la présidente de l’Institut français, Eva Nguyen Binh.
Au-delà de l’appel à candidatures général, deux appels spécialisés ont été ouverts aux professionnels des métiers d’art et du design, d’une part, et de la musique classique, d’autre part. Chacun de ces appels était doté de son propre jury de sélection.
Les candidats à une résidence métiers d’art et design, soutenue par la Fondation Bettencourt Schueller, ont été sélectionnés par Odile Hainaut et Claire Pijoulat, co-fondatrices de WantedDesign, en collaboration avec les experts en arts visuels et en design de la Villa Albertine.
Nouvelle composante du programme de résidence, les résidences dédiées à la musique classique sont proposées grâce au soutien de Société Générale. Le jury de cet appel à candidatures était composé de Stéphanie Childress, ancienne résidente de la Villa Albertine et cheffe d’orchestre, Edouard Fouré Caul-Futy, co-directeur du département des concerts et spectacles de la Philharmonie de Paris, Cristina Rocca, vice-présidente du Chicago Symphony Orchestra, et Judith Roze, conseillère culturelle adjointe de France et directrice adjointe de la Villa Albertine.
Outre les appels à candidatures, certains résidents seront sélectionnés dans le cadre d’initiatives et de partenariats spéciaux. Par exemple, les lauréats du Prix Recanati-Kaplan et du Prix Pisar bénéficieront également d’une résidence à la Villa Albertine.

La saison 2025 des résidences de la Villa Albertine, développée en partenariat avec la Fondation Albertine, bénéficie du soutien du ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires Etrangères et du ministère de la Culture.
