Reinventing artists’ residencies

Villa Albertine, a new French institution for arts and ideas in the United States, builds on the bold and innovative programs that have been the hallmark of the French cultural network abroad for more than a century.

Created by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and supported by the French Ministry of Culture, Villa Albertine offers a novel artists’ residency model in which residents choose the location best suited to their work within the host country. With a permanent presence in 10 major US cities, it aims to foster in-depth exploratory residencies for artists, thinkers, and culture professionals hailing from all creative disciplines. Since its inauguration in 2021, Villa Albertine hosts annual cohorts of around 60 residents for one- to three-month customized residencies throughout the United States, from Puerto Rico to Alaska.

Powered by a team of 80 people in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., Villa Albertine actively supports the endeavors of French cultural actors across the country through a bold and nimble program, in close collaboration with leading American cultural organizations.

Villa Albertine also offers 15 professional programs that cover key cultural fields and creative industries. Supported by Albertine Foundation, these programs, led by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and now to be managed by Villa Albertine, have reinforced the links between the French and American cultural landscapes over the past 30 years with the support of numerous partners. The Villa also provides studies, analyses, and reports on cultural trends for professionals in a variety of creative industries on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Villa Albertine universe further encompasses a magazine, which highlights inspiring individuals, explores U.S. territories through a global lens, documents emerging trends, and shares original creations.

Festivals, events, and symposia complete this flexible, global venture, supporting French cultural stakeholders in the areas central to their creative inquiries.
