{"id":263695,"date":"2023-09-07T13:50:50","date_gmt":"2023-09-07T13:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/?p=263695"},"modified":"2023-09-11T14:39:49","modified_gmt":"2023-09-11T14:39:49","slug":"fall-season-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/va\/press-release\/fall-season-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Villa Albertine announces fall season with spotlight on museums, literature, dance, and residencies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>New York, September 7, 2023<\/strong> \u2013 Villa Albertine today announced its fall season: a packed schedule of performances, artists talks, and cultural events aimed at building exchange and collaboration between creative communities in the US, France, and beyond.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlights include a major industry symposium on the future of dance in the face of multiplying crises; live discussions with the General Director of Paris-Mus\u00e9es <strong>Anne-Sophie de Gasquet<\/strong>, Brooklyn Museum Director <strong>Anne Pasternak<\/strong>, and <strong>Zeina Arida<\/strong>, Director of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha;&nbsp; and book launches with some of the most prominent contemporary authors in France, including <strong>Mohamed Mbougar Sarr <\/strong>and <strong>Marie NDiaye<\/strong>. Throughout the season, 26 international artists participating in Villa Albertine\u2019s ambitious exploratory residency program will pass through New York, and several will feature in public events.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fall Villa Albertine will unveil two major additions to its historic Fifth avenue headquarters: a new statue of the Little Prince on the building\u2019s garden wall, in celebration of the iconic book\u2019s 80<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/the-villa\/hugo-toro-studio-redesign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">redesigned fifth floor Atelier<\/a> with generous support from the Florence Gould Foundation. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the coming months, the cultural institution will also announce the winners of several of its tentpole grants and prizes supporting emerging French artists and paving the way for their work to reach American audiences. These include the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/professionals\/etant-donnes-contemporary-art\" target=\"_blank\">\u00c9tant donn\u00e9s Contemporary Art<\/a> grants and prize, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/professionals\/albertine-translation-fund-and-prizes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Albertine Translation Prize<\/a>, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/professionals\/beauford-delaney-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\">Beauford Delaney Grant<\/a> for research in African American art history, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/professionals\/laila-hida-wins-first-recanati-kaplan-prize-0\/\" target=\"_blank\">Recanati-Kaplan Prize<\/a>, and more.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis fall season reflects our commitment to culture in all its forms, with a diverse program of events and announcements that each serve to uplift talented international creatives and spark engagement with the great questions of our time,&#8221; said Ga\u00ebtan Bruel, Director of Villa Albertine. &#8220;October will also mark two years since the launch of Villa Albertine. It is the fourth major institution of its kind, joining Villas in Spain, Japan, and the original 350-year-old Villa Medici in Italy, each working to bring contemporary French culture to a new audience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/events\/villa-albertine-museum-series-2023-24-women-rethink-future-museums\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Museum Series<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fall 12 women museum directors will participate in Villa Albertine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/events\/villa-albertine-museum-series-2023-24-women-rethink-future-museums\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Museum Series,<\/a> a monthly public conversation at Villa Albertine\u2019s New York City HQ, organized in partnership with the Center for Curatorial Leadership. The series pairs French and American museum directors for in-depth discussions about the challenges and opportunities facing museums globally.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the fall lineup: <strong>Anne Pasternak<\/strong>, Shelby White and Leon Levy Director of the Brooklyn Museum, <strong>Anne-Sophie de Gasquet<\/strong>, General Director of Paris-Mus\u00e9es (the museums of the City of Paris), and <strong>Laure Dalon<\/strong>, Director of the Mus\u00e9e des Augustins, Toulouse. Also joining the program is <strong>Zeina Arida<\/strong>, Director of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.albertine.com\/events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Author Talks<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For France\u2019s \u201crentr\u00e9e litt\u00e9raire\u201d this fall (a concentrated period of new book releases), Villa Albertine and Albertine Books will be the New York City hub for some of the most exciting new titles in English translation. Events featuring Prix Goncourt-winning novelists <strong>Marie NDiaye <\/strong>and <strong>Mohamed Mbougar Sar,<\/strong> as well as much-celebrated Villa Albertine author-in-residence <strong>Fran\u00e7ois-Henri D\u00e9s\u00e9rable<\/strong>, are among the many highlights of this Literary October.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continuing its stewardship of Francophone literature in the English-speaking world, in December Villa Albertine will announce the 2023 winners of the Albertine Translation Prize, a cash prize and publication grant honoring the best contemporary French literature in English translation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Resident Events&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Villa Albertine offers bespoke experiences for global creators, thinkers, and cultural professionals to engage in creative exploration all across the US, reinventing the model for residencies to facilitate cross-cultural learning and exchange.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September, Villa Albertine will host events with three of these artists in residence\u2014filmmaker <strong>Rapha\u00ebl Millet<\/strong>, writer <strong>Fran\u00e7ois-Henri D\u00e9s\u00e9rable,<\/strong> and violin soloist <strong>Marina Chiche<\/strong>\u2014facilitating fascinating glimpses behind the scenes at their ongoing projects.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/the-villa\/fall-dance-season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Albertine Dance Season<\/strong><\/a><strong>: nationwide performances and an international symposium<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023 Villa Albertine has organized a Franco-American dance exchange of unprecedented scale. The nationwide exploration of dance from inception to performance spotlights French, France-based, African, and Caribbean choreographers and companies for a year of international exchange.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From September through December the Season will support performances by 18 companies across 13 US cities. One third of these companies will be making their US debut. In addition to artist residencies and expert talks across the country, Villa Albertine will also host a <a href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/events\/albertine-dance-season-professional-symposium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>professional symposium on October 26 and 27<\/strong><\/a> at its New York City headquarters.
