This year is no exception, and we are pleased to see publications by major names on the French literary and intellectual scene \u2014including Patrick Boucheron and Constance Debr\u00e9, both 2022 Villa Albertine residents, Annie Ernaux, Emmanuel Carr\u00e8re and Mona Chollet \u2014as well as many promising new authors.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>FICTION<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In fiction,\u00a0we have identified <strong>118<\/strong> publications, <strong>60<\/strong>\u00a0of which were released in France in the last five years, confirming a growing interest in contemporary Francophone fiction.<\/p>\n<p>Some major contemporary French figures are now steadily being published in the US, such as the novelist Emmanuel Carr\u00e8re with <em>Yoga<\/em> (Farrar, Straus &amp; Giroux), the award-winning author Annie Ernaux with <em>Getting Lost<\/em> (Seven Stories Press) and <em>Do What They Say or Else<\/em> (University of Nebraska Press),\u00a0and Maylis de Kerangal with <em>Painting Time<\/em> (Picador).<\/p>\n<p>Many\u00a0prize-winning\u00a0books\u00a0are making\u00a0their way to\u00a0American bookstores, including OuLiPo member Herv\u00e9 Le Tellier, The Anomaly (the 2020 Prix Goncourt, Other Press), J\u00e9r\u00f4me Ferrari\u2019s\u00a0<em>In His Own Image<\/em>\u00a0(Prix\u00a0litt\u00e9raire\u00a0du\u00a0Monde\u00a0in 2018, Europa Editions), Serge\u00a0Joncour\u2019s<em>\u00a0Human Nature <\/em>and <em>Lean on Me<\/em>\u00a0(respectively\u00a0Prix Femina in 2020\u00a0and\u00a0Prix\u00a0Interalli\u00e9\u00a0in\u00a02016,\u00a0Gallic Books), and <em>Not Everybody Lives the Same<\/em> <em>Way<\/em> by Jean-Paul Dubois (the 2019 Prix Goncourt, The Overlook Press).<\/p>\n<p>A few\u00a0indispensable\u00a0classics are also slated for release, such as Colette\u2019s <em>Ch\u00e9ri and The End of Ch\u00e9ri <\/em>(New York Review Books and Norton &amp; Co), Stendhal\u2019s\u00a0<em>Red and Black<\/em>\u00a0(University of Minnesota Press), and Marguerite Duras\u2019s <em>The Easy Life<\/em> (Bloomsbury Publishing). Though most of the previously listed authors are now established authors here in the US, some are seeing their first publication in the US, including Villa Albertine resident <a href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/residents\/constance-debre\">Constance Debr\u00e9<\/a> with her <em>Love Me Tender<\/em> (Semiotext(e)).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>NON-FICTION<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For a second time, non-fiction is the most translated genre with <strong>168<\/strong> titles. Philosophy in translation remains a strong suit for French literature with <strong>31<\/strong>\u00a0titles, including works by star figures Achille Mbembe (<em>The Politics of Time, <\/em>Polity Press) and Isabelle Stengers (<em>Making Sense in Common,\u00a0<\/em>University of Minnesota Press).<\/p>\n<p>Among the <strong>18<\/strong>\u00a0history titles, a particularly notable work comes from famed medievalist and Villa Albertine resident <a href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/residents\/patrick-boucheron\">Patrick Boucheron<\/a>: <em>Trace and Aura: The Recurring Lives of St. Ambrose of Milan<\/em> (Other Press), as well as Fran\u00e7ois Hartog\u2019s <em>Chronos<\/em>, which studies the West\u2019s relationship to time (Columbia University Press) and the always enthralling political explorations of the French capital by Eric Hazan with <em>Paris in Turmoil<\/em> (Verso Books).<\/p>\n<p>Among other exciting publications, you\u2019ll find Mona Chollet\u2019s feminist essay <em>In Defense of Witches<\/em> (St. Martin\u2019s Press), and an old reflection on domination with <em>Decolonizations<\/em> by Pierre Singarav\u00e9lou, Karim Misk\u00e9, and Marc Ball (Other Press).<\/p>\n<p>The production of books on nature and environmental issues continues to grow significantly, attesting to the urgency of the topic; examples include Baptiste Morizot saw three of his essays translated in 2022, <em>Ways of Being Alive<\/em> and <em>Rekindling the Embers of Life <\/em>(both published by Polity Press), and <em>Wild Diplomacy<\/em> (SUNY Press), and the illustrated guide to the multifarious sex lives of animals, <em>Sexus Animalis: There is Nothing Unnatural in Nature <\/em>by Emmanuelle Pouydebat (MIT Press).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>GRAPHIC NOVELS<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the graphic novel category, <strong>122<\/strong>\u00a0titles are slated for publication in 2022:<\/p>\n<p>Notable works include:\u00a0<em>Call me Nathan<\/em> by Villa Albertine resident <a href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/residents\/quentin-zuttion\">Quentin Zuttion<\/a>, a coming-of-age story that explores transgender identity (SelfMadeHero); the funny and sharp <em>Word Record Holders<\/em> by famous cartoonist Guy Delisle (Drawn &amp; Quarterly); the moving and insightful <em>So Much For Love<\/em>, Sophie Lambda\u2019s first graphic novel, in which she tells her love story with a narcissistic pervert (First Second Books\/Macmillan); the vibrant and luminous comic\u00a0by\u00a0Cy,\u00a0<em>Radium Girls<\/em>\u00a0(Iron Circus Comics); and Antoine Maillard&#8217;s chilling and oppressive <em>Slash Them All<\/em> (Fantagraphics Books).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>CHILDREN\u2019S\u00a0BOOKS<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>34<\/strong>\u00a0children\u2019s books will be translated in 2022, including <em>Alma<\/em> by Timoth\u00e9e de Fombelle, a powerful novel that deals with the history of the slave trade (Europa Editions), and <em>Blaze and the Castle Cake for Bertha Daye<\/em> by Claude Ponti, a phantasmagorical story from one of the world\u2019s most beloved children\u2019s book authors. Also of note is Marie Dorleans\u2019s <em>Our Fort, <\/em>which takes readers on a fantastic walk leading to the fort of our dreams (New York Review Books), while Enchanted Lion Books will publish its third picture book by Beatrice Alemagna, <em>You Can\u2019t Kill Snow White<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>POETRY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In poetry, <strong>13<\/strong>\u00a0works will be published this year. Among them, we have identified some classics, such as Arthur Rimbaud\u2019s <em>Drunken Boat: Selected Writings <\/em>(New York Review Books) and Paul Val\u00e9ry\u2019s <em>Selected Poems<\/em> (Oxford University Press).
