Often described as the \u201cmodern father of French animation,\u201d Michel Ocelot has engaged Francophone,\u00a0Francophile, and cinephile audiences through his many appearances in cultural and educational institutions.\u00a0Reflecting on his early years in Guinea-Conakry, where his father served as a school superintendent, Ocelot offered rare insights into his artistic trajectory, from his African childhood in the 1940s to his emergence as a major animator in Paris.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ocelot was invited and accompanied by Yassine Ait Ali, PhD candidate in Princeton University\u2019s Department of French & Italian and founding director of the Princeton French Film Festival (PFFF)<\/a>, to close the 2026 edition of this rapidly growing cultural event, which marks the fourth edition of the festival, supported by the Albertine Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que program.<\/a>

His visit concluded a month-long series of screenings, masterclasses, and book discussions with an intimate dinner conversation with Ma\u00eflys Vallade, a promising animator whose\u00a0Little Am\u00e9lie, or the Character of the Rain<\/em>\u00a0(2025) had been nominated at major international ceremonies this year, including the Oscars and the Annie Awards, and screened at Princeton the previous evening. Their dialogue opened with Ocelot\u2019s enduring passion for animation in the Harry Potter-like dining hall: \u201cI am a lucky guy. I have always known what I wanted to do.\u00a0So\u00a0I did it, and I did it well. And I have always been happy doing it.\u201d Vallade wrapped up the conversation with a special tribute to a \u201cspiritual father\u201d whose films shaped her formative years at the Gobelins, France\u2019s leading school of animation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite this enthusiasm, Ocelot recalled his initial twenty-year period (1976\u20131996), during which animation was not a \u201clucrative\u201d occupation in France, before explaining how the sudden success of Kirikou and the Sorceress <\/em>contributed to transforming the industry. The film helped foster a distinctive branch of cinema that followed a trajectory different from its American counterparts, including Walt Disney Studios, whose \u201cgolden age\u201d spanned the 1920s to the 1960s. Alongside other animators, Ocelot contributed to structural changes in the field, including  the creation of the C\u00e9sar Award for Best Animated Film in 2011, which he himself received in 2019 for Dilili in Paris<\/em>, a richly crafted rediscovery of Belle \u00c9poque Paris that brought the PFFF to a close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A central pillar of the\u00a0Princeton French Film Festival\u00a0is its pedagogical mission, which provides local students with the rare opportunity to watch films in classrooms and engage directly with world-class filmmakers\u2014an initiative that sparked Michel\u00a0Ocelot\u2019s\u00a0first connection with Princeton.\u00a0This relationship began last spring when middle school students at Princeton Charter School embarked on a cinematic journey through the Villa Albertine\u2019s\u00a0Cin\u00e9School\u00a0program<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Institut\u00a0Fran\u00e7ais\u00a0film\u00a0platform. Captivated by an evening screening of\u00a0The Black Pharaoh, the Savage and the Princess<\/em>\u00a0(2022), organized on the International Day of Francophonie, they\u2014and their parents\u2014\u00a0submitted\u00a0a series of inquiries to Ocelot via their teacher, Ralitsa\u00a0Zaharieva.\u00a0Unexpectedly, the busy director quickly responded with characteristic warmth through two personal videos filmed from his Paris balcony.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon his arrival in Princeton,\u00a0he deepened this bond through a generous school visit.\u00a0During his time with the students, Ocelot\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0his craft using original cut-out materials from\u00a0Princes and Princesses<\/em>, and the community even celebrated his work through a themed tasting menu based on this film. Reflecting on the significance of his work and its impact on her students,\u00a0Zaharieva\u00a0noted: \u201cIf art has the power to improve the world, Ocelot\u2019s work serves that noble purpose by championing intellect, beauty, and peaceful resolution.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey continued at the Lawrenceville School, where high school students engaged with Ocelot on assigned films and readings, as well as at the French American School of Princeton, which had incorporated\u00a0Azur and Asmar<\/em>\u00a0into its weekly cinema class. In all these institutions, which also includes the after-school PhilaFLAM Princeton, teachers have long relied on pedagogical dossiers and film analysis to understand Ocelot\u2019s masterpieces. When asked to name his favorite character among the many he created, a question often posed by all audiences he\u00a0encountered, Ocelot replied: \u201cI am a good father. And as a good father, I love all my characters, who are my children.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ocelot was then welcomed by similarly passionate audiences in New York City, where he opened the 10th edition of Francophone Short Films in Harlem<\/a> at the Maysles Documentary Center, supported in part by the International Organization of the Francophonie. After screenings of short films from Belgium, France, Switzerland, Togo, and Quebec,\u00a0Ocelot\u2019s\u00a0early work\u00a0The Three Inventors<\/em>\u00a0(1980), alongside\u00a0The Princess of Diamonds\u00a0<\/em>(2000), was followed by a lively conversation\u00a0with\u00a0artist and award-winning\u00a0filmmaker\u00a0Brian Hawkins\u00a0and\u00a0animator\u00a0Alexis\u00a0Zounguere-Sokam.
The\u00a0latter\u2019s\u00a0digitally produced\u00a0Independence\u00a0Tchatcha<\/em>\u00a0(2025) offered\u00a0a striking contrast to\u00a0Ocelot\u2019s\u00a0handcrafted \u201cbricolage,\u201d a term he noted resists direct translation due to its unique artistic connotation. At the end, both agreed on the unprecedented resources computer-based tools\u00a0offer\u00a0while allowing the inclusion of handmade\u00a0crafts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ocelot also participated in the annual \u201cEn Fran\u00e7ais, Oui but Why?\u201d<\/a> fair organized by the Lyc\u00e9e Fran\u00e7ais de New York. A screening of Dilili in Paris<\/em> drew a large audience and was followed by a discussion with St\u00e9phanie Valloatto, director of the New York chapter of French in Motion. The event concluded with a signing session featuring books from Albertine Bookstore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before hopping on a plane to attend other festivals, including Morocco\u2019s upcoming FICAM, Ocelot\u2019s tour culminated in a welcome brunch hosted by Candy Kugel at her animation studio in downtown Manhattan. A longtime colleague who began her career in animation around the same time, Kugel brought together leading figures in the field\u2014including Emily Hubley, Ray\u00a0Kosarin, and Bill Plympton\u2014for a joyful reunion with their French peer.\u00a0\u00a0

Like the many students, teachers, and audiences encountered throughout the tour, they expressed keen interest in Ocelot\u2019s forthcoming projects, including a memoir in the making and the celebration of\u00a0Kirikou\u2019s\u00a030th anniversary in 2028, which is set to be revived as a live stage production in Paris and beyond.
