Born from the meeting between theater director and actor Florient Jousse and Big Chief Juan Pardo, an iconic leader of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras Indians, Flamboyants! is the result of an original artistic collaboration linking several Creole territories separated by thousands of miles yet connected through shared historical experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project began when Florient Jousse discovered the world of the Mardi Gras Indians during an exhibition at the Mus\u00e9e du Quai Branly in Paris. Fascinated by this unique Afro-Creole tradition, he traveled to Louisiana, where he met Big Chief Juan Pardo. Their conversations sparked a powerful realization: despite the geographical distance, New Orleans and Reunion Island share a collective memory shaped by colonization, slavery, and the many forms of cultural resistance that emerged in response. Soon, a third territory joined this artistic dialogue: Puerto Rico, whose musical and popular traditions resonate with these same historical legacies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Blending live performance with documentary storytelling, Flamboyants! brings together personal narratives, music, and theatrical performance. On stage, the\u00a0powerful\u00a0voices\u00a0of\u00a0Mari\u00e9n Torres L\u00f3pez\u00a0and\u00a0Ivelisse\u00a0D\u00edaz\u00a0bring\u00a0the\u00a0rhythms\u00a0of Puerto\u00a0Rican\u00a0bomba to life,\u00a0while\u00a0Reunionese\u00a0musicians\u00a0Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Madia et Z\u00e9lito D\u00e9liron puisent dans la tradition du\u00a0maloya.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Performed in five languages\u2014Louisiana Creole, R\u00e9union Creole, French, English, and Spanish\u2014the production celebrates the creativity of Creole communities and the vital role the arts play in preserving, transmitting, and continually reinventing collective memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
