This exhibition will unpack the trajectory of 150 African-American, Caribbean, and African artists based in France from the 1950s to the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition will explore the shift of renowned post-war artists from Paris to New York, showcasing Paris as an anchor point for anti-colonial resistance and unpacking its network of support for Africa and the then &#8220;Third World&#8221;, as well as its connections to many other cities involved in liberation struggles (such as Algiers, Istanbul, and Port-au-Prince).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This historical journey will be captured by contemporary artists reflecting on these decades of struggle, during which aspirations and acts of emancipation confronted numerous forms of invisibility and racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay tuned for Moderated by curator<strong> Anne Collins Smith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This last session of the <em>Black paris Talk Series<\/em> is organized in collaboration with Xavier University Art Gallery and Art and Performance Studies Department, Xavier University of Louisiana Library, and the Consulate General of France in New Orleans.<\/p>\n<p>In New Orleans, Alicia Knock\u2019s itinerary includes a tour of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hnoc.org\/exhibitions\/captive-state-louisiana-and-making-mass-incarceration\"><em>Captive State: Louisiana and the Making of Mass Incarceration<\/em><\/a> at the Historic New Orleans Collection and Williams Research Center In New Orleans,\u00a0guided by curators <strong>Eric Seiferth<\/strong> and <strong>Libby Neidenbach<\/strong>, followed by a visit to the archives. Knock will also explore the Amistad Research Center, meeting with Director <strong>Kathe Hambrick<\/strong>, <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><strong>Dr. Maurita Poole<\/strong>, director of Newcomb Museum of Art, <\/span>and will connect with <strong>Nick Stillman<\/strong>, Executive Director of Prospect, as well as tour the Joan Mitchell Center to engage with resident artists.<\/p>\n<p>At Xavier University, she\u2019ll meet with university leadership to discuss potential partnerships and host a discussion on curatorial practice with students from Xavier, Dillard, Loyola, and Tulane.<\/p>\n<p>Knock\u2019s agenda includes visiting the Backstreet Cultural Museum and the Mus\u00e9e f.p.c.
