It is grounded in the paintings currently on view in the Saint Louis Art Museum exhibition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slam.org\/exhibitions\/monet-mitchell-painting-the-french-landscape\/\"><strong>Monet\/Mitchell: Painting the French Landscape<\/strong><\/a>, a partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondationlouisvuitton.fr\/en\/\"><strong>Louis Vuitton Foundation<\/strong><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marmottan.fr\/en\/\"><strong>Musee Marmottan Monet<\/strong><\/a>. The discussion will cover a range of subjects including the two artists\u2019 attitudes to nature, abstraction, music, and poetry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>This discussion will be moderated by Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/rll.wustl.edu\/people\/lionel-cuill%C3%A9\">Lionel Cuill\u00e9<\/a>, founder and director of the\u00a0French connexions\u00a0Center of Excellence at Washington University in St. Louis.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>The Speakers<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slam.org\/press\/staff-bio-simon-kelly-curator-of-modern-and-contemporary-art\/\"><u><em><strong>Simon Kelly, Curator and Head of Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Saint Louis Art Museum<\/strong><\/em><\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Simon Kelly has published extensively, particularly on nineteenth and early twentieth-century French art, and organized numerous international exhibitions, for example, <em>Degas, Impressionism and the Paris Millinery Trade <\/em>(2017) and <em>Millet and Modern Art<\/em> (2020). In 2021, he published the book, <em>Theodore Rousseau and the Rise of the Modern Art Market<\/em>. Kelly is the curator of the Saint Louis exhibition,<em> Monet\/Mitchell: Painting the French Landscape<\/em>, and is currently working on an exhibition on Matisse and the sea.<\/p>\n<p><u><em><strong>Marianne Mathieu, Art historian and Curator<\/strong><\/em><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Marianne Mathieu created the international relations department of the Mus\u00e9e d&#8217;Orsay in 2003 and then served for ten years as Deputy Director, head of Collections and Exhibitions of the Mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet. In 2022, she founded the ACPA agency &#8211; Advising Curating Producing Art. A specialist in Impressionism, she has curated major exhibitions in France and abroad for more than twenty years. Among others <em>&#8220;Impression, Sunrise. The Biography of a Painting&#8221;<\/em> (2014, Paris, Mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet), <em>&#8220;Monet The Collector&#8221;<\/em> (2017, Paris, Mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet) <em>&#8220;Julie Manet, the impressionist memory&#8221;<\/em> (2022, Paris, Mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet) and more recently &#8220;Monet-Mitchell&#8221; at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris. She is the author of several essays and books devoted to Claude Monet and Impressionism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rll.wustl.edu\/people\/lionel-cuill%C3%A9\"><u><em><strong>Dr. Lionel Cuill\u00e9, Teaching professor of French, Washington University in St Louis<\/strong><\/em><\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lionel Cuill\u00e9 is the founder and director of the<a href=\"https:\/\/artsci.wustl.edu\/ampersand\/washu%E2%80%99s-french-connection\">\u00a0<strong>French connexions\u00a0center of excellence<\/strong><\/a> at Washington University in St. Louis. His teaching and research focus on contemporary French poetry, the avant-gardes, and ecocriticism.
