Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement\u2019s #Never21 hashtag, French-Malian choreographer and dancer\u00a0Sma\u00efl Kanout\u00e9\u2019s\u00a0deeply resonant piece\u2014making its U.S. premiere\u2014pays tribute to young people of color who have lost their lives to gun violence all over the world before reaching the age of 21. The performance, separated into three segments, focuses on the senseless deaths of young Black youth in New York, Johannesburg, and Rio de Janeiro.
\nExcerpts of powerful testimonies from victims\u2019 family members are transcribed on the dancers\u2019 bodies, combining dance and visual art. The dancers\u2019 intense movement draws on contemporary and intuitive dance,\u00a0krump<\/em>, popping, and\u00a0baile funk<\/em>\u00a0in recounting the stories of many broken lives.<\/p>\n

The tour of “Never Twenty One” by Sma\u00efl Kanout\u00e9 is part of Albertine Dance Season: A year-long celebration of the art of dance from inception to performance.<\/a><\/p>\n
