Djibril Diop Mamb\u00e9ty, a towering figure in world cinema, is best known for his two features,\u00a0Touki Bouki<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Hyenas<\/em>. Yet these two extraordinary films tell only part of the story of the director\u2019s enormous accomplishments in his too-brief life. Two masterpieces of the medium-length form (featurette<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0moyen m\u00e9trage<\/em>) that Mamb\u00e9ty completed in his final years provide us a fuller picture of the elements that define his small, but perfect, filmography\u2014a rich social vision, sly humor, and formal ingenuity.<\/p>\n
