How can agitation \u2013\u00a0\u201cthe collective shaping of\u00a0dissent\u201d in Mel Y. Chen\u2019s words \u2013 be a somatic as well as a choreographic tool? How\u00a0can the unruly gathering of insurgent\u00a0bodies breach the theater of politics to enable other\u00a0ways of dancing and being with one another?<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Miguel Gutierrez<\/strong> is a choreographer, composer, performer, singer, writer, educator, podcaster, visual artist, and arts advocate who has been based in Lenapehoking\/Brooklyn for twenty five years. His work creates empathetic and irreverent spaces outside of traditional discourse. He believes in an approach to art making that is fierce, fragile, empathetic, political, and poetic.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Emma Big\u00e9<\/strong> digs, writes, translates and improvises with experimental contemporary dances and trans*feminist theories. A PhD in philosophy and a translator, she is also a dancer and curator, the editor of Steve Paxton: Drafting Interior Techniques (Culturgest, 2019) and the author of Mouvementements, \u00c9copolitiques de la danse (La D\u00e9couverte, 2023).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n\t<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0gJpR4OLHRo\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\t<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>About\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/events\/dance-assembly-conversation-series\"><em>Dance Assembly: A Conversation Series<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Curated by No\u00e9mie Solomon in collaboration with the Villa Albertine team<\/p>\n\n<p>The dance\u00a0figure of the\u00a0assembl\u00e9\u00a0\u2013 in which the feet meet in the air before\u00a0landing together on the ground \u2013 serves as a prompt for this series of panel\u00a0discussions, post-performance conversations and\u00a0symposia. In the\u00a0assembl\u00e9,\u00a0physical limits are tested for bodies and gestures to come together. A critical\u00a0mode of gathering, the assembly highlights the role of choreography in storing\u00a0collective\u00a0knowledge, anticipating social formations and sensorial revolutions.\u00a0Our questions and provocations include: what are the practices of collaboration\u00a0and transmission contemporary dance enacts across\u00a0disciplinary forms,\u00a0generational divides, and geopolitical borders? How does it rehearse\u00a0sustainable processes and futures? How do choreographic archives score\u00a0contemporary lives? Can diversity and\u00a0equity be aesthetic gestures as well as\u00a0political tools?
