\u00a0Launched in 1993, the NYAFF<\/a> <\/strong>is one of the first film festivals in the United States to reflect on the myriad ways African and diaspora filmmakers have used the moving image to tell complex nuanced stories of cultural and aesthetic significance. Under the banner title, Freeforms, the festival will present over 50 films from more than 25 countries that explore and embrace the visionary, probing and fearless spirit of African film and diaspora storytelling.<\/p>\n

NYAFF 2023\u00a0<\/h3>\n

The 30th New York African Film Festival is presented under the banner Freeforms<\/strong>\u2014through the explorations of experimental and free-forms of cinematic and artistic expression, we celebrate unique and expansive approaches to the moving image and storytelling. The film program will include new and contemporary films and moving image works, as well as a robust program of repertory cinema, highlighting the ways that artists have shaped ideas and diversified the canon of film.<\/p>\n

The festival will be presented with Film at Lincoln Center (FLC) from\u00a0Wednesday, May 10 \u2014 Tuesday, May 16. From FLC, the festival will continue at Maysles Cinema in Harlem from\u00a0Friday, May 19 \u2014 Sunday, May 21, and will conclude at Brooklyn Academy of Music\u2019s (BAM) Rose Cinemas from\u00a0Friday, May 26 \u2014 Thursday, June 1\u00a0in conjunction with the annual DanceAfrica celebration. The festival will kick off with a Town Hall at The Africa Center, in early May, featuring African and diaspora artists displaying and discussing work that explores the festival\u2019s theme, Freeforms.<\/p>\n

Den Muso\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/a>(1975)\u00a0by pioneer\u00a0Malian filmmaker,\u00a0Souleymane Ciss\u00e9, is\u00a0one of the many great\u00a0offerings of this 30th\u00a0edition. This poignant\u00a0film, restored by\u00a0Souleymane Ciss\u00e9 and La Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que fran\u00e7aise in 2020, in collaboration with the Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que Afrique and the French Institute, thanks to the support of Path\u00e9,\u00a0will\u00a0screen\u00a0on\u00a0May 12 at 5:30 pm<\/strong>\u00a0and will be followed by an exclusive\u00a0Q&A with director Souleymane Ciss\u00e9<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
