{"id":58770,"date":"2022-02-07T22:22:29","date_gmt":"2022-02-07T22:22:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/events\/ballet-des-porcelaines\/"},"modified":"2023-08-23T07:39:33","modified_gmt":"2023-08-23T07:39:33","slug":"ballet-des-porcelaines","status":"publish","type":"app_event","link":"https:\/\/villa-albertine.org\/va\/events\/ballet-des-porcelaines\/","title":{"rendered":"Ballet des Porcelaines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ceas.uchicago.edu\/\">The Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS)<\/a> at the University of Chicago has partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/arts.uchicago.edu\/\">UChicago Arts<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/taps.uchicago.edu\/\">Committee on Theater and Performance Studies (TAPS)<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/provost.uchicago.edu\/\">Office of the Provost<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/music.uchicago.edu\/\">Department of Music <\/a>to bring <em><strong>Reimagining the\u202fBallet des Porcelaines: A Story of Magic, Desire, and Exotic Entanglement<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0to Chicago audiences.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 1739, a group of artists and aristocrats staged a ballet pantomime known as the\u202fBallet des\u00a0Porcelaines.\u202fIt tells the story of a prince searching for his lover on a faraway island ruled by a magician, who has transformed the inhabitants into porcelain.\u202fNYU Associate\u202fProfessor of Art History\u00a0<strong>Meredith\u202fMartin<\/strong>\u202fand\u00a0choreographer, arts activist, and Final Bow for Yellowface co-founder\u00a0<strong>Phil Chan<\/strong>\u00a0have revived this lost gem and updated the ballet for multiracial and contemporary audiences, mainly flipping its script and putting Asian protagonists front and center.
