Her book\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyrb.com\/products\/in-the-eye-of-the-wild?variant=37890623832232\">In the Eye of the Wild<\/a><\/em>, a story that is both erudite and literary, recounts her strange &#8220;encounter&#8221; with a bear, and its English translation is scheduled to be released in English on November 16, 2021 (New York Review Books, tr. Sophie R. Lewis). Considered a New World thinker, her work is a true reflection on the inner workings of our world and the term &#8220;wilderness&#8221; which she analyzes through the concept of animism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She spoke with great American author David Vann, whose internationally successful books are a true ode to the immensity of nature and encourage us to think about human relationships through the prism of the natural world. Before the meeting, we had the pleasure of welcoming translator <strong>Sophie Lewis<\/strong> to talk about her work on the book.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ga3VuHCL8sU&amp;ab_channel=VillaAlbertine\">Watch the talk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nastassja Martin<\/strong>\u00a0is a French author and anthropologist who has studied the\u00a0Gwich-in people of Alaska and the Even people of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Along with\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyrb.com\/products\/in-the-eye-of-the-wild?variant=37890623832232\">In the Eye of the Wild<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(<em>Croire aux fauves<\/em>, \u00e9ditions Verticales in France)\u00a0she has written\u00a0<em>Les \u00c2mes\u00a0sauvages: Face \u00e0\u00a0l\u2019Occident, la\u00a0r\u00e9sistance\u00a0d\u2019un\u00a0peuple\u00a0d\u2019Alaska<\/em>, for which she received the Prix Louis\u00a0Castex\u00a0from the Acad\u00e9mie\u00a0fran\u00e7aise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Translated\u00a0into\u00a0twenty-three languages,\u00a0<strong>David Vann<\/strong>&#8216;s internationally bestselling books\u00a0have won fourteen prizes and have appeared on eighty-three &#8220;Best Books of the Year&#8221; lists in a dozen countries.\u00a0Among his successes, his book\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/products\/sukkwan-island-david-vann?variant=32129337393186\">Sukkwan\u00a0Island<\/a><\/em>, initially published in 2008 by the University of Massachusetts Press, was published in France in January 2010\u00a0by\u00a0Gallmeister. It was awarded the\u00a0M\u00e9dicis\u00a0foreign prize,\u00a0sold over 300,000 copies, and was adapted into a\u00a0comic\u00a0book\u00a0by Ugo Bienvenu.\u00a0Thanks to his success in France, David Vann&#8217;s work has now been translated into eighteen languages in more than sixty countries. In\u00a0addition to his work as an author, he also writes for The New York Times, The Atlantic, Esquire, Outside, Sunset, Men&#8217;s Journal, McSweeney&#8217;s, and many other publications.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tatiana Schlossberg<\/strong> is an award-winning journalist and former <em>The\u00a0New York Times\u00a0<\/em>Science writer whose work has appeared in\u00a0<em>The Washington Post<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Atlantic<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Vanity Fair,\u00a0<\/em>and elsewhere. Her book,\u00a0<em>Inconspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Don\u2019t Know You Have,\u00a0<\/em>won the Rachel Carson Environment Book Award in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sophie Lewis<\/strong> is a translator and an editor. Previously senior editor at And Other Stories, over 2018-2020 she was managing editor at the Folio Society and is now freelancing again. Working from French and Portuguese, she has translated Stendhal, Verne, Marcel Aym\u00e9, Violette Leduc, Emmanuelle Pagano, Mona Chollet, Le\u00efla Slimani, Sheyla Smanioto, Natalia Borges Polesso and Jo\u00e3o Gilberto Noll, among others. In 2018 her translation of No\u00e9mi Lefebvre\u2019s\u00a0<em>Blue Self-Portrait\u00a0<\/em>was shortlisted for the Scott Moncrieff and Republic of Consciousness prizes. Her co-translation of Pagano\u2019s\u00a0<em>Faces on the Tip of My Tongue\u00a0<\/em>was longlisted for the 2020 International Booker Prize.
